09 Jan Triumph Thruxton 1200R
Seeing the Triumph Thruxton 1200R is like going back in time. Triumph brought back the great British racing legend with a perfect balance of style, performance and handling. The Thruxton R brings the legend to an all new modern, classic sport-bike (café racer).
The old refined lines not only transport you back in time, but awaken a sense of urgency in you to jump on and take it out for coffee and dinner. From the moment you sit on it, you feel connected and at one with this legend. The seating position seems perfect whether you are a short or tall rider. You sit slightly forward, with feet firmly on the ground when you need to stop. When riding, the leg position is ideal and aids agility. This allows for great control under braking and turning, on low as well as high-speed riding.
Upfront, on the dials, we have a basic LCD multi-functional instrument display with a few old school tricks and a modern touch, packed with the analogue speedometer, analogue tachometer, service indicator, gear position, fuel level and range as well as the different rider modes (road, rain and sport) and traction control status.
Riding a 1200 cc motorcycle that produces 97 PS/ 96 Bhp (72 kW) @ 6750 rpm may seem daunting for some riders, but everything about this motorcycle allows for a great experience. The wet, multi-plate assist clutch also provides a rider-friendly motorcycle that is by no means boring. When opening the throttle, it allows you to enjoy a very wide power band and a unique sound that gets all heads turning instantly. The 270-degree crank on the Triumph Thruxton 1200R mimics the classic 90-degree British twin. The exhaust is a Chromed 2 into 2 exhaust system with twin chrome silencers. Where there’s power, good brakes are needed, and you can rest assured that with the Triumph Thruxton 1200R, you are getting the best. It’s fitted with Brembo 4-piston radial monobloc callipers on the front, and ABS is standard. On the rear you are looking at a Single 220mm disc, Nissin 2-piston floating calliper, also with standard ABS.
Let’s not forget that this was the 2016 Bike of the Year winner in South Africa. This means you have a good balance of everything that a great motorcycle has to offer. Part of what makes the Thruxton R handle so well is the Showa 43mm fully adjustable forks. This allows more advanced riders to enjoy this motorcycle on more competitive terrain as well, be it on tight twisty roads or on long sweeping corners. This bike is legendary after all!
Part of the styling that stands out, is the wheels. In the front you get a 32-spoke 17 x 3.5-inch rim and in the rear you get a 32-spoke 17 x 5-inch rim. The 32-spoke, silver polished rims form a very big and important part of the great handling and unique styling. Traction is great when leaning over and using the power that this Triumph Thruxton 1200R provides. It does not matter which gear you find yourself in, with 112Nm at only 4000rpm, you can open the throttle in any gear and expect a quick and effortless accelerating experience.
